EARLY TREATMENT

Early treatment, or an initial phase of orthodontic treatment are often questioned and misunderstood. Two generations prior to now, Orthodontists believed in putting on braces only when all the permanent teeth had erupted. A few brave orthodontists saw benefits of starting earlier. This created a trend of Orthodontists starting every case early and orthodontic treatments lasting 4 or 5 years or longer. Today, orthodontists would never have treatments last that long. That “4 to 5-year treatment” is broken up into an early partial treatment of approximately 12 months, and then followed up with approximately 18 months of full braces when all the permanent teeth have erupted. Not every individual needs an early phase of orthodontic treatment. Dr. Steve Wynn estimates that one in three benefits from an early phase of orthodontic treatment. Usually, an individual with more severe orthodontic conditions needs a “head start” or early phase. The other two out of three individuals are best treated with one comprehensive orthodontic treatment starting close to when all the permanent teeth have erupted.

About Dr. Steve Wynn

In 1990, Dr. Wynn was honored to enter into the practice of orthodontics with Dr. Norm Von Herzen, who had practiced orthodontics for over 30 years in Newport Beach. Dr. Wynn has been in the Mariner Medical Arts Building on Westcliff Drive in Newport Beach since then.
